Scott Bessent Rules Out Running for Lindsey Graham's Senate Seat

Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, has announced that he will not run to replace the late Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC). In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Bessent stated, "There’s going to be a primary in South Carolina, and I will not be in it." When asked if there was any chance of him entering the race, he responded, "No chance. I have the best job in Washington." Speculation about Bessent's potential candidacy arose following Graham's death at the age of 71. Bessent, a South Carolina native, expressed his support for Darline Graham Nordone, Graham's sister, as a suitable interim replacement until the end of his term. Bessent attended her swearing-in ceremony on Monday. Meanwhile, several South Carolina Republicans are positioning themselves for the Senate seat, with Trump endorsing Rep. Russell Fry (R-SC) as a strong candidate. Other potential candidates include retiring Reps. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Ralph Norman (R-SC), both of whom previously ran for governor. Graham, who was first elected to the Senate in 2003, was seeking a fifth term this year, and the winner of the Republican primary is expected to have a significant advantage in the general election in November.
