Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone on July 13, 2026, to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. Nordone will serve the remainder of Graham's term. A special Republican primary is scheduled for next month to determine which GOP candidate will advance to the general election against Democratic nominee Annie Andrews.
Nordone has been involved in her brother's political career, participating in campaign events and advertisements. Their relationship deepened following the deaths of their parents in the 1970s, with Lindsey Graham becoming her legal guardian.
Outside of politics, Nordone has a long career in public service, having been appointed commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind in 2019 and serving as president of the National Council of State Agencies for the Blind since January 2026. President Donald Trump endorsed her appointment, calling it a tribute to Lindsey Graham. Senator Tim Scott also supported her selection, stating that she understands her brother's commitment to family and the state.
Lindsey Graham, who served in the Senate since 2002, was known for his influence on foreign policy and was a close ally of Trump. Nordone's appointment continues a tradition of relatives temporarily succeeding deceased members of Congress. She is married, resides in Lexington, South Carolina, and has two daughters, making her the first female senator from South Carolina.
