The House Rules Committee has approved a rule for a floor vote on the Sunshine Protection Act, which aims to make Daylight Saving Time permanent across the United States. The committee's approval came on Monday with a 6-4 vote. The legislation allows states to adopt Daylight Saving Time year-round, with an option to opt out. Supporters, including President Donald Trump, argue that eliminating the clock changes would have health benefits and boost economic activities. Currently, all states except Hawaii and most of Arizona observe the biannual clock changes. Proponents claim that permanent Daylight Saving Time would improve sleep schedules, enhance outdoor activities, and reduce traffic accidents. However, some opponents, including medical organizations, advocate for permanent standard time, citing potential health risks associated with more darkness in the mornings. The House Energy and Commerce Committee previously passed the measure with a vote of 48-1. The Senate had passed a version of the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, but it did not advance in the House.
