A grandfather, identified as Carl Isom-McDaniel, is recovering after being injured in a bison attack at Yellowstone National Park on July 13, 2026. The incident occurred at Bridge Bay Campground near Yellowstone Lake while McDaniel was visiting with his grandson. Reports indicate that McDaniel suffered multiple broken bones but did not lose consciousness during the attack.
Photographer Mike McLeod, who captured the incident on video, stated that McDaniel appeared to have shielded his grandson from the bison's charge. McLeod and other bystanders intervened to help McDaniel and drive the bison away.
Prior to the attack, the bison had displayed aggressive behavior, having charged a group of teenagers nearby. McDaniel and his grandson approached the bison while unaware of its previous actions. After the attack, McDaniel was taken for medical treatment and underwent surgery for a broken leg. He is reportedly in good spirits and grateful that his grandson was not harmed. Yellowstone National Park advises visitors to maintain a distance of at least 25 yards from bison, especially during mating season when they can be more aggressive.
