Infighting has emerged within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) regarding the selection of its presidential candidate for the 2028 election. The DSA, which has approximately 120,000 members, is experiencing internal divisions as some members advocate for an early endorsement of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., ahead of the group's national convention scheduled for summer 2027. A faction within the organization, known as the 'Groundwork' caucus, is calling for a national member poll to endorse Ocasio-Cortez immediately, believing this would enhance the DSA's influence in the upcoming presidential race.
However, the DSA's National Political Committee (NPC) voted 14-13 against allowing a nationwide poll for the endorsement, opting instead to adhere to the existing convention process. This decision has drawn criticism from various members, including Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City chapter, who expressed concerns about the leadership's decision to limit member participation in the endorsement process.
Other members echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that the delay in endorsement could hinder the DSA's effectiveness in supporting a potential Ocasio-Cortez campaign. In response, NPC member Amy Wilhelm stated that there was no intention to prevent member participation in polls and clarified that chapters could still conduct their own polls.
The debate reflects broader tensions within the DSA, as some members fear that the organization may miss an opportunity to mobilize support for Ocasio-Cortez, who has not confirmed her candidacy for the presidency. Speculation also exists regarding her potential run for the Senate against Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. The DSA has faced challenges in the past regarding its relationship with Ocasio-Cortez, including a withdrawal of endorsement in 2024 due to disagreements over her positions on certain issues.
A spokesperson for Canary Mission commented on the implications of an Ocasio-Cortez presidency, suggesting it could pose national security risks due to the DSA's ideological stance. The spokesperson emphasized the need for caution regarding the DSA's influence in mainstream politics.
