The Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition identified the victim, stating he was authorized to work in the U.S. and had a Social Security number. Reports indicate he was on his way to work when the incident occurred. His identity has not been confirmed by federal agents.
Witnesses reported seeing at least two men wearing vests labeled 'Police' and 'Immigration and Customs Enforcement.' Videos captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing a white Kia sedan and law enforcement attempting to access the vehicle. One witness, Lucas Scott, described hearing ICE officers yelling before the shooting occurred. Another local resident, Daniel Boucher, noted that he saw the victim bleeding and heard him say, 'I tried to stop.'
The Department of Homeland Security has not provided immediate comments regarding the shooting. This incident follows another shooting involving ICE in Texas, where a Mexican immigrant was killed. The recent events have raised concerns regarding ICE's operations and accountability, particularly following a series of shootings involving federal immigration agents since the beginning of President Donald Trump's second term. Earlier this year, Maine experienced an increase in ICE operations under 'Operation Catch of the Day,' which aimed to detain individuals with criminal records, though data showed that only a small percentage of those detained had prior convictions.
