A shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Biddeford, Maine, has resulted in one death. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Pool and Hill streets. Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed the fatality.
Project Relief, an advocacy group for racial justice and immigrant rights, stated that one of their community members was killed during the encounter with ICE. Maine State Police and the FBI are currently investigating the incident. The Biddeford Police Department has stated that inquiries should be directed to ICE, as their role is limited to providing scene security.
The Maine Attorney General's Office indicated that information will be shared when appropriate. The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear. Local residents have expressed outrage, with Olivia Clay stating, "I’m disgusted. This is horrible. I mean, the citizens of this country are literally being gunned down in the street for doing nothing. For the color of their skin." Another local, Marcia Hanes, called for the disbandment of ICE, claiming that their actions are untrained and harmful.
A rally is planned at Mechanics Park in Biddeford following the incident. According to the Associated Press, if an ICE officer was responsible for the shooting, it would mark at least the ninth death linked to federal immigration officials since the start of the Trump administration's immigration policies. The reported shooting occurs amid increased enforcement efforts by ICE, which had previously announced the end of enhanced operations in Maine after making numerous arrests in January. Critics have raised concerns about the administration's immigration enforcement tactics, particularly following recent fatalities involving ICE officers.
