Cruz advises Republicans to remain vigilant in Texas Senate race

He drew comparisons to his past reelection campaigns, noting the heightened enthusiasm of the Democratic Party. Cruz's comments followed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's primary win against four-term Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). He described Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico as a significant contender, stating, "The Democrats believe they have a chance to win the general." Cruz emphasized the importance of not taking the upcoming election for granted, recalling his own experiences as a target for Democrats during his campaigns. He noted that in 2018, he faced former Representative Beto O’Rourke in a closely watched race that saw high Democratic turnout. Cruz attributed his narrow victory that year to Republican complacency, as Donald Trump was not on the ballot. He expressed concern that Talarico, who has recently received substantial campaign donations, could be a formidable opponent for Paxton.
