Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton are actively seeking the support of Senator John Cornyn's backers following Cornyn's defeat in a Senate primary runoff against Paxton. Talarico expressed his desire to connect with Cornyn's supporters, stating, "To Senator Cornyn’s supporters: you have a place in our campaign." Paxton, who won the primary by 28 points, also reached out to voters, thanking them and emphasizing his intention to earn their support.
Former President Donald Trump acknowledged Cornyn's contributions and encouraged his supporters to back Paxton, stating, "John will remain my friend for a long time to come." Some Republicans have begun to support Paxton, including Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso and Senator Bernie Moreno. Cornyn confirmed his support for Paxton in his concession speech, stating, "I intend to do so again in this general election."
However, some Republicans, including Majority Leader John Thune, have not yet publicly supported Paxton. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has also removed critical statements about Paxton as they prepare to support him financially.
Democratic strategist Dallas Jones noted that centrist Republicans may feel alienated and could be drawn to Talarico's campaign, which he believes aligns with their values. Paxton's campaign is expected to highlight Talarico's progressive record, which they argue could deter swing voters in Texas. Talarico has labeled Paxton as "the most corrupt politician in America," referencing Paxton's impeachment trial and past legal issues. Recent election forecasts have indicated a shift towards Democrats in the Texas Senate race, with the seat now leaning Republican.
