Tom Steyer, a Democrat running for governor of California, has set a record for campaign spending this year with an advertising buy of at least $195 million. Despite this significant investment, polling results indicate that Steyer remains behind fellow Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican candidate Steve Hilton ahead of the gubernatorial primary on June 2.
Recent polling data shows Hilton leading Steyer by 7 points, while a poll from Emerson College indicates Becerra is ahead by 1 point. Steyer's campaign released new polling on Wednesday, revealing that he and Becerra are tied at 19%, with Hilton at 22%.
Steyer's campaign manager, Heather Hargreaves, expressed optimism about Steyer's potential to gain ground, noting that he has increased his support by 4 points since late April, despite facing $30 million in negative advertising. Hargreaves stated, "This poll confirms what we’re hearing on the ground across California: voters are looking for an outsider who will take on the political establishment to lower costs and deliver real change."
Steyer's campaign spending far exceeds that of other candidates, with Becerra reportedly spending around $9.75 million. Steyer's net worth is estimated at $2.4 billion. Former Democratic Representative Katie Porter, also a candidate, criticized Steyer's spending, suggesting it creates an unfair advantage. Steyer has previously addressed accusations of using his wealth to influence elections, asserting that he does not believe wealth can buy political office.
California's nonpartisan primary system allows the top two candidates to advance to the general election, and Steyer's campaign believes that the current polling scenario makes it unlikely for two Republicans to secure the top spots.
