Ugandan authorities ordered the closure of the border with Congo on May 27, 2026, due to a surge in Ebola cases in Congo and emerging cases in Uganda. The decision was made by a local Ebola task force led by Vice President Jesca Alupo, following an increase in health workers in Uganda being exposed to the virus from Congolese patients who crossed the border prior to the outbreak declaration on May 15.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concerns regarding border closures, stating that such measures are often based on fear rather than scientific evidence. The WHO emphasized that these restrictions can lead to unmonitored informal crossings, increasing the risk of disease spread. They advised that infected individuals or those in contact with them should avoid international travel unless for medical evacuation.
The border between Uganda and Congo is extensive, with many footpaths used for crossing. The WHO reported that the outbreak in Congo is outpacing health authorities, with nearly 1,000 suspected cases and at least 220 suspected deaths. As of now, Uganda has reported seven Ebola cases, including a fatality on May 14. Dr. Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health, noted that while the case load in Uganda is stable, the number of exposed health workers is increasing. Travel across the border will only be permitted for emergencies related to the Ebola response, cargo, or security.
