Israel conducted an airstrike late Tuesday targeting Mohammed Odeh, the new leader of Hamas's military wing, who took over approximately one week ago. Israeli officials did not confirm whether Odeh was killed in the strike, stating only that he was 'struck.' The operation was ordered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz.
Odeh succeeded Ezzedine al Haddad, who was killed in a previous airstrike less than two weeks prior. According to Israeli officials, Odeh was involved in the October 7, 2023, attacks that resulted in the murder and abduction of Israeli civilians and soldiers. Netanyahu's office stated that Israel will continue to pursue those involved in the October 7 attacks.
On the same day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that they had dismantled approximately 11 kilometers of underground tunnels used by Hamas in northern Gaza. Initial reports indicated that a residential building in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City was struck, but the number of casualties remains unconfirmed.
This airstrike is part of Israel's ongoing military actions amid rising tensions in the Middle East. On Monday, the IDF resumed bombing Hezbollah positions in Lebanon while peace talks regarding the Iran conflict are ongoing. Netanyahu stated that Israel has killed over 700 Hezbollah fighters since a ceasefire was established with Lebanon last month. Israeli and Lebanese officials are scheduled to meet at the Pentagon on Friday to discuss the ceasefire, while broader negotiations with Iran are being led by the United States.
