House Republicans Request Investigation into Maryland Mail-in Ballot Error

<p>A group of House Republicans is seeking clarification regarding a mail-in ballot error that resulted in some Maryland voters receiving primary ballots for the incorrect party. House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., and Vice Chair Laurel Lee, R-Fla., sent a letter to the Maryland State Board of Elections (SBOE) on Tuesday, questioning the circumstances surrounding the ballot printing error and the state's safeguards for verifying mail-in ballot accuracy.</p><p>The inquiry follows the SBOE's announcement last week that a vendor error led to an unspecified number of Maryland residents receiving incorrect mail-in ballots ahead of the state's gubernatorial primary election scheduled for June 23. The SBOE stated that it would resend ballots to over 500,000 voters who may have been affected and assured that measures were in place to ensure that only one vote would be counted.</p><p>The GOP lawmakers expressed the need for more transparency from the state elections board. They noted that while the SBOE is taking steps to void the initial batch of ballots, distributing more than half a million replacement ballots could create logistical challenges and potentially affect public confidence in the electoral process.</p><p>The House Administration Committee Republicans requested a response from Maryland State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis by June 9. DeMarinis defended the state's response to the vendor error and its mail-in voting practices, stating that they are essential to the electoral process. He mentioned that replacement ballots had begun to be mailed.</p><p>The issue has also drawn attention from President Donald Trump, who has called for a Justice Department investigation into the Maryland State Board of Elections and accused Governor Wes Moore, D-Md., of corruption, asserting without evidence that the ballot error was intended to benefit Democrats.</p><p>The Republican National Committee (RNC) criticized the ballot printing error as a case of election mismanagement and has initiated measures to enhance voter education and oversight in Maryland.</p><p>Spokespersons for the state elections board and Governor Moore did not respond immediately to requests for comment.</p>
