House Republicans Investigate Mail-in Ballot Errors in Maryland

<p>A group of House Republicans is seeking information regarding a mail-in ballot error that resulted in some Maryland voters receiving primary ballots for the incorrect party. House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., and Vice Chair Laurel Lee, R-Fla., sent a letter to the Maryland State Board of Elections (SBOE) on Tuesday questioning the ballot printing issue and the state's safeguards for verifying mail-in ballots.</p><p>This inquiry follows the SBOE's announcement last week that a vendor error led to an unspecified number of Maryland residents receiving incorrect mail-in ballots ahead of the state’s gubernatorial primary election on June 23. Officials indicated that they would resend ballots to over 500,000 voters who may have been affected and stated that measures are in place to ensure that only one vote is counted.</p><p>The GOP lawmakers emphasized the need for increased transparency from the state elections board. They expressed concerns that distributing over half a million replacement ballots could create logistical challenges and potentially diminish public confidence in the electoral process.</p><p>The House Administration Committee has requested a response from Maryland State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis by June 9. DeMarinis has defended the state's response to the vendor error and its mail-in voting practices, describing them as essential to the electoral process. He stated that replacement ballots have begun to be mailed.</p><p>The issue has also drawn attention from President Donald Trump, who has called for an investigation by the Justice Department into the Maryland State Board of Elections and accused Governor Wes Moore of corruption without providing evidence. The Republican National Committee has criticized the ballot printing error as a case of election mismanagement and has initiated measures to enhance voter education and oversight in response.</p><p>Spokespersons for the state elections board and Governor Moore did not immediately respond to requests for comment.</p>
