Teenager Injured in Shark Attack While Boating Off Galveston Island

<p>A Texas teenager was injured in a shark attack while boating with his father on Memorial Day weekend. The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, when the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office contacted the U.S. Coast Guard regarding reports of a 17-year-old boy bitten by a shark off the coast of Galveston Island, according to ABC 13.</p><p>The victim, his father, and another individual were approximately two hours offshore when the bite occurred. Authorities stated that the teenager was bitten while attempting to pull the shark onto the boat.</p><p>The boy’s father immediately applied a tourniquet to the wound and began navigating towards the Galveston Yacht Basin. However, the boat became disabled near the jetties in the Gulf, prompting an emergency response from the Coast Guard. Rescue crews applied a second tourniquet to control the bleeding before transporting the teenager back to shore.</p><p>The victim was conscious upon arrival and was subsequently taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch for medical treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the extent of the teen’s injuries or the species of the shark involved in the incident. The U.S. Coast Guard and Galveston County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.</p>
