CIA Director John Ratcliffe communicated to President Donald Trump concerns regarding Iran's willingness to agree to nuclear concessions as part of a final deal to end the war. The deal, set to be signed on Friday in Geneva, Switzerland, includes a postponement of final nuclear negotiations until after the signing. Despite Trump's optimism, three officials informed Axios that the intelligence community remains skeptical about Iran's commitment to making serious concessions. Reports indicate that Iranian officials discussed negotiation details among themselves in terms that differed significantly from what they conveyed to the U.S. and mediators. One source stated, "The intelligence reflects that the Iranian intentions are not in line with their commitments under the deal." Ratcliffe, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and War Secretary Pete Hegseth, expressed skepticism about the deal, while Vice President JD Vance and special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner supported it. Although Trump initially emphasized a maximalist approach, he later prioritized achieving a lasting nuclear deal. A failure to secure U.S. demands could represent a significant setback for Trump's objectives in the war. The 14 points of the memorandum of understanding have not yet been published, but reports suggest that Iran committed to not pursuing a nuclear weapon. Final nuclear negotiations are scheduled to occur over a 60-day period during what is termed an extended ceasefire. A failure to reach a nuclear deal could lead to a resumption of hostilities, as Trump has consistently threatened military escalation if the deal falls through.
