The Pasadena Police Department in California released video footage of an incident that occurred on September 7, 2025, in which one officer accidentally shot another officer. Police Chief Gene Harris described the event as resulting from unsafe and out-of-policy horseplay involving loaded firearms. The injured officer has since recovered.
In the footage, an officer draws his weapon and points it toward an approaching vehicle before re-holstering it. A puff of smoke is seen, and a bullet hole appears in the vehicle's windshield, with the officer reacting after being shot. Chief Harris explained that one officer improperly drew his firearm and pointed it at another officer in the vehicle. During this interaction, the firearm discharged, striking the windshield and the left shoulder of the standing officer.
The chief stated that while a criminal investigation is ongoing, the administrative investigation has concluded, and disciplinary measures have been taken. He emphasized that the conduct observed does not align with the department's expectations and commitments to the community.
