The Department of Justice (DOJ) has indicted eight protesters associated with the University of Michigan for allegedly engaging in disruptive actions, including threats against a local Jewish nonprofit group. U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Jerome F. Gorgon Jr., stated that these actions are contrary to American law and emphasized the DOJ's commitment to countering intimidation with justice.
The defendants, aged 21 to 28, reportedly made demands for divestment from Israel following the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas. One member allegedly called for escalation and mobilization to demand divestment by any means necessary. The group is accused of vandalizing the Jewish Federation of Detroit's building with graffiti and symbols associated with Hamas.
In a separate incident, two individuals allegedly threw glass jars filled with a blue substance at the University of Michigan provost's home and vandalized it with graffiti. The DOJ claims that some members of the group used violent language, with one individual allegedly threatening a victim's family. The charges include conspiracy to transmit a threat and destruction of property, with potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison. The FBI's Detroit office is leading the investigation with assistance from local law enforcement agencies.
