President Donald Trump endorsed Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) in her reelection campaign against Democratic nominee Graham Platner. During an event at the White House, Trump described Collins as a 'sane woman' and acknowledged their complicated relationship, stating, 'She’s not my best friend at all.'
Trump highlighted Collins's independent stance, noting her vote with Democrats on an Iran war powers resolution in April. He praised her for her voting record, mentioning that she recently cast her 10,000th consecutive vote in the Senate.
In contrast, Trump criticized Platner, calling him a 'thug' and a 'phony,' referencing controversies surrounding Platner's campaign, including allegations of misconduct. Despite these issues, Platner secured 72% of the Democratic primary vote. The National Republican Senatorial Committee indicated that while Platner is facing challenges, he is not to be underestimated.
Democrats need to win Collins's seat to have a chance at regaining control of the Senate, but her reputation and voting history may bolster her campaign efforts.
