The report reveals that then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta began negotiating a plea deal with Epstein in 2007 after Epstein's arrest for felony solicitation in 2006. Reiter gathered evidence and interviewed numerous victims, but faced obstacles from state and federal prosecutors. He sought a meeting with Acosta to discuss the prosecution of Epstein, expressing concerns that Epstein's legal team was influencing the case.
Despite evidence of multiple potential victims, Epstein ultimately pleaded guilty to a single count of solicitation and was not indicted on sex trafficking charges until 2019. Reiter criticized the failures of the criminal justice system in addressing Epstein's actions and emphasized the need for reforms to prevent similar situations in the future.
