ISS Astronauts Take Shelter in SpaceX Capsule Due to Air Leak

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) were ordered to take shelter inside a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft on June 5, 2026, following a worsening air leak in the Russian section of the station. NASA mission control issued the order at approximately 9:04 a.m. Eastern Time as Russian cosmonauts worked to repair the leak, which had increased from approximately one pound of air loss per day to two pounds per day, according to a senior NASA official. Five of the seven crew members, including American astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, Chris Williams, French astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, temporarily took refuge in the Crew Dragon while two Russian cosmonauts remained in the affected area to carry out repairs. NASA and Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, have been investigating a series of recurring air leaks in the Russian section of the ISS for several months. The latest leak is believed to be associated with the Zvezda service module, which includes critical life-support systems. After approximately two hours, NASA instructed the crew to return to normal operations aboard the station, while Roscosmos paused repair efforts to assess further measurements and data.
