House Votes to Approve $1.3 Billion Aid Package for Ukraine

Eighteen House Republicans voted on Thursday to approve an additional $1.3 billion in aid to Ukraine, joining nearly all Democrats in a 226-195 vote. This decision goes against the preferences of House GOP leadership and former President Donald Trump regarding the approach to the war in Ukraine. Among those supporting the measure was Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-CA), who noted the need for leverage in diplomacy following the collapse of a recent ceasefire. The aid package was advanced to the House floor through a discharge petition initiated by Kiley and Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). While the House passed the bill, it faces challenges in the Senate, where it will need bipartisan support to overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold. Additionally, even if it passes Congress, Trump retains the option to veto it, necessitating a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override.
