Broncos kicker Wil Lutz made a 53-yard field goal in overtime, leading the Denver Broncos to a 17-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. Seattle received the ball first in overtime and faced a third-and-7 from their own 28-yard line. Quarterback Sam Darnold attempted a pass into double coverage, which was intercepted by Denver cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian, setting up the Broncos at Seattle’s 43-yard line. Broncos head coach Sean Payton then called for three consecutive running plays to manage the clock and center the kick for Lutz.
For the first twenty minutes, Payton’s strategy was effective, as Denver controlled time of possession and led 14-3 at halftime, with touchdowns from J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey. However, the second half saw Denver's offense struggle, with quarterback Bo Nix finishing with only 107 passing yards and lacking a downfield threat. Seattle rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring a touchdown and converting a two-point attempt to narrow the score to 14-11. After Denver's offense stalled, Seattle kicker Jason Myers made a 34-yard field goal to tie the game and force overtime.
In the second half, Denver managed just 36 yards on eight possessions, resulting in multiple three-and-outs. Denver's defense, however, played a crucial role, sacking Darnold five times and forcing turnovers, including a strip by Nik Bonitto and an interception by Kris Abrams-Draine. Despite Seattle accumulating 353 total yards and Jaxon Smith-Njigba catching 12 passes for 134 yards, three turnovers hindered their performance. The Broncos improved to 4-2 with the win, while Seattle's struggles continued.
Payton will have a 10-day break to address the offensive issues before the next game against the Arizona Cardinals.
