A couple, Rudi Lacatusu, 28, and Mirabela Lacatusu, 26, both Romanian nationals, have been accused of stealing jewelry from elderly victims in a theft spree across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maryland. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the couple, referred to as 'Bonnie and Clyde,' is now in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to DHS, the couple allegedly carried out at least 14 thefts, with stolen necklaces valued between $2,000 and $3,000 each. One incident involved a 73-year-old woman in Valley Stream, New York, who was approached by the couple under the pretense of asking for directions. After assisting them, the woman was hugged by the female passenger, who then placed two gold-colored necklaces around her neck. Shortly thereafter, the woman discovered that her own gold necklace, worth approximately $2,000, was missing.
Investigators connected the suspects to similar thefts in Franklin Square and East Meadow. Both individuals face three counts of fourth-degree grand larceny. DHS stated that Nassau County authorities transferred the couple to ICE following their arrests. The couple reportedly entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown time and location.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin commented on the arrests, criticizing New York Governor Kathy Hochul's sanctuary policies, which he claims endanger public safety. He stated, 'If it were up to sanctuary politicians like Governor Kathy Hochul, these criminals would be back on the streets to rob more Americans.'
The arrests were part of Operation Rotten Apple, an ICE initiative that resulted in the arrest of 2,197 illegal immigrants in New York, including individuals charged with serious crimes. Nassau County police have issued warnings to residents about distraction scams targeting the elderly, advising vigilance in public spaces. Residents who have experienced similar thefts are encouraged to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
