Duane “Keffe D” Davis, an ex-gang leader, was sentenced on October 13, 2026, to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996.

In August 2026, the 63-year-old was found guilty of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon. Following a two-week trial, jurors took less than three hours to reach a conviction. Davis had five prior convictions and had publicly discussed his involvement in the murder, prompting Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal to seek the maximum sentence.

This sentencing comes over 30 years after Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip, where he died six days after being shot.

Prosecutors argued that he provided the gun and facilitated the murder.

Following the 1996 incident, the case remained unsolved for decades. In 2019, Davis self-published a memoir titled “Compton Street Legend,” in which he described his involvement in the rapper’s death. He was arrested in September 2023 and, despite his memoir claiming he was the “shot caller” in the murder, he pleaded not guilty.

Members of Shakur’s family provided victim impact statements in court before Judge Carli Kierny announced the sentence. Davis’s attorney indicated plans to appeal the ruling.

Six months after Shakur’s murder, another prominent rapper, Christopher Wallace, known as “Biggie,” was also killed. No charges were filed in that case, and a connection between the two murders has never been confirmed.
