The foreign ministers of Germany, Norway, Poland, and the UK convened at the Warsaw Security Forum on Tuesday to address security concerns related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that recent incidents, including a fire at a Starlink station in Poland, indicate that Europe is 'in Russia's crosshairs.' Investigators in Germany are pursuing suspects connected to the fire, which is believed to have targeted the satellite-based internet service used by Ukraine's military.
Wadephul criticized the US decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel as part of a deal to supply the US, emphasizing the need to strengthen the sanctions regime. He noted that Europe is urging Washington to maintain a strong stance against Russia. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband acknowledged the diplomatic challenges posed by the situation, describing recent days as 'very difficult.'
Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed hope that US President Donald Trump would leverage his relationship with Poland to secure a permanent US military base and advocate for Ukraine's position against Russian aggression. Norway's Espen Barth Eide highlighted the importance of the collective actions taken by Europe and its allies in response to Russian aggression.
In response to criticism, Trump stated that the US continues to share intelligence with Ukraine and clarified that other countries would be purchasing Russian diesel as part of the deal he announced. Wadephul mentioned the arrests of two individuals with Turkish citizenship in Germany, suspected of having ties to organized crime and working on behalf of Russia.
Miliband praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his leadership during the conflict and suggested that the idea of an 'energy ceasefire' proposed by Trump should be considered in light of the attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Wadephul added that any ceasefire negotiations should also address grain exports and shipments in the Black Sea to prevent food shortages in North Africa.
