Data Shows Decline in Teenage Girls Identifying as Lesbian or Bisexual

<p>The number of teenage girls identifying as lesbian or bisexual has decreased over the past four years, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlighted by The Washington Post. The share of ninth-grade girls identifying as lesbian or bisexual dropped from 30% in 2021 to 17% in 2025, while those identifying as bisexual alone fell from 26% to 13%.</p><p>In contrast, the percentage of boys identifying as gay or bisexual has remained largely unchanged over the past decade. The share of high school girls identifying as lesbian or bisexual had increased following the COVID-19 pandemic but has since begun to decline.</p><p>Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, noted that the downward trend began during the administration of former President Joe Biden, raising questions about whether the change is linked to political factors. The data does not clarify why different age groups are affected differently.</p><p>Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, commented on the situation, suggesting that changes in government funding may have influenced these trends. Walt Heyer, a detransitioner and author, cautioned against making definitive conclusions from the findings, emphasizing the need for further research before declaring a lasting shift.</p>
