The term "ragebait" has been named the 2026 Youth Word of the Year in Germany, as announced on Saturday at the Frankfurt Book Fair by publisher PONS Langenscheidt. This follows its recognition as the 2025 Oxford Word of the Year. The "Jugendwort des Jahres" campaign documents the popularity of new slang expressions among German youth. "Ragebait" refers to social media content designed to provoke anger, frustration, or moral outrage, aiming to increase engagement on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, where high-energy interactions are rewarded by algorithms. The term was chosen from a shortlist of three words, which also included "Peak" and "Crashout." Approximately one million young people aged 11 to 20 voted for their preferred term starting from August 28. "Ragebait" received 36.5% of the votes, while "Peak" garnered 33.8% and "Crashout" received 29.7%. Artur Raiser, marketing manager at PONS Langenscheidt, noted that the close results indicate the relevance of all three terms among generations Z and Alpha. The term "Crashout" is used to describe an intense emotional breakdown, while "Peak" signifies something that is considered the best. PONS Langenscheidt has been selecting the Youth Word of the Year since 2008, initially through a jury and since 2020 via an online vote. Terms that are offensive, racist, or discriminatory are excluded from consideration. The nomination and voting process for the next year's word will begin in the summer of 2027. Last year's selection was "Das crazy," and "Aura" was the Youth Word of the Year for 2024.
