<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Former President Barack Obama has increased his involvement in the 2026 elections this week, lending his name to efforts to support Democrats and endorsing several candidates in battleground states.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Obama appeared in a series of digital ads for the Democratic National Committee aimed at driving voter turnout and grassroots fundraising. He stated, "there are states right now in play that I would not have imagined being in play," according to CBS News. The six-figure ad buy comes as Democrats aim to reclaim a Senate majority by picking up seats in Michigan, North Carolina, Maine, Alaska, Texas, and other states where Republican candidates are viewed as vulnerable.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DNC Chairman Ken Martin commented, "Democrats are heading into November with the wind at our backs and momentum on our side, but we’re not taking anything for granted. President Obama’s support will motivate and mobilize voters in the home stretch and help Democrats across the country win in races up and down the ballot." </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This development coincides with Obama campaigning for Democratic Senate nominee Abdul el Sayed in Michigan. El Sayed has faced criticism for his views on Israel and his ties to political activist Hasan Piker. However, Obama defended el Sayed, stating he aligns with traditional Democratic values and expressed surprise at the performance of candidates across the country, including in Texas, where Senate Democratic nominee James Talarico is competitive against GOP rival Ken Paxton.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Obama remarked, "There are states right now in play that I would not have imagined being in play. If you had told me that the polling currently shows James Talarico ahead of Ken Paxton, I would have said, ‘Eh, I don’t think so.'" He also indicated his support for el Sayed's policies, noting, "he’s for a higher minimum wage and healthcare for all, and it doesn’t seem crazy to me. You know, FDR was for that, too." </p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Polling in Michigan and Texas indicates close races, prompting Republicans to invest heavily in those states to maintain their Senate majority.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Democrats are working to counteract Republican momentum in the weeks leading up to the election, with Obama’s increased involvement suggesting that the party believes it has a viable chance of flipping competitive seats.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">El Sayed stated, "I know that he knows the critical role that Michigan is going to play in holding Trump accountable, in winning back the Senate, and in building forward the future that we need," following his primary win in August after a call with Obama.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Obama has focused his endorsements on Senate and gubernatorial candidates and has not endorsed any candidates for the House of Representatives.</p>
