A routine inspection of legally owned firearms resulted in the deaths of two local government employees in Bavaria. The incident occurred when the officials were checking the storage of firearms at a home in the village of Berngau on Thursday. The suspect, a 60-year-old man, barricaded himself inside his residence and engaged in a 12-hour standoff with police before being arrested.
According to police, the victims, a 45-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, were shot during the inspection. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots around 2 p.m. local time (1200 GMT), leading to a significant police response. Officers found the male victim dead outside the house, while the female victim was later discovered inside.
The suspect contacted police during the standoff, admitting to firing shots and indicating he would not surrender without resistance. Special police units, including a tactical response team and a helicopter, were deployed to the scene. Negotiators attempted to persuade the suspect to surrender peacefully, but at approximately 2:20 a.m. (0020 GMT/UTC) Friday, police entered the building using explosives. During the operation, the suspect was shot in the leg and received medical treatment.
Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind the suspect's actions. Investigators from the Regensburg criminal police department plan to question the suspect in coordination with prosecutors in Nuremberg-Fürth.
