Halima Brewer, a Green Party activist, was elected to the party's disciplinary committee during the annual conference in Brighton. Brewer has expressed support for Hamas and made controversial statements regarding Israel on social media. She stated, 'I used to oppose Hamas because I thought their strategy for freeing Palestine was counterproductive. I have dropped that naive view and now think the only thing Palestinians have left is violent resistance against the bigger terrorist – the biggest of all now – Israel.' Brewer has shared posts that compare Jewish Israelis to Nazis and claim that Israel does not exist.
The Green Party has faced scrutiny after a motion declaring 'Zionism is Racism' was passed at the conference, leading to accusations of antisemitism within the party. Zack Polanski, the party leader, has been criticized for not addressing these issues adequately. The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) reported the party to the equalities watchdog, stating that the motion is discriminatory against Jews. CAA head Gideon Falter described the motion as 'racist and unlawful.'
Prime Minister Andy Burnham condemned the motion as a 'completely wrong decision' and called for its reversal. He emphasized that it undermines the possibility of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. The Board of Deputies of British Jews expressed concern over Brewer's comments, suggesting they should be investigated by the police. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp also criticized the situation, stating that the presence of such views on the disciplinary committee is unacceptable. A spokesperson for the Green Party stated that the views expressed by Brewer do not reflect the party's values and that they will investigate any concerns raised.
