An emergency protective order has been filed against former NBA player J.R. Smith after he was accused of causing "serious bodily injury" to a woman during an incident in Texas last month, according to court documents obtained by the California Post. The order, signed by a judge on September 29, prohibits Smith from having any communication with the woman except through an attorney and bars him from coming within 333 yards of her residence or workplace. Additionally, Smith is not allowed to possess a firearm or ammunition.
The allegations against Smith date back to September 18, when he was accused of "intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly" causing injury to a woman with whom he had a familial or dating relationship, as stated in a criminal complaint filed on October 2. The complaint details that Smith allegedly hit, grabbed, or pushed the woman during the altercation.
Following the incident, a warrant for Smith's arrest was issued by the Southlake Police Department. He was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Royse City, Texas, on September 28. Smith was released on a $5,000 bond on September 29 and has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily injury family violence, according to court records.
Smith's attorney, Justin A. Moore, expressed that Smith is eager to resolve the matter and has confidence in the legal process. Moore emphasized that Smith is presumed innocent and requested respect for the privacy of all parties involved. A request for further comment from Moore regarding the protective order was not returned.
