The Justice Department is investigating former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson for allegedly lying to Congress during her testimony to the House Jan. 6 Committee in 2022.

Hutchinson’s testimony before the House select committee in June 2022 included accounts regarding President Donald Trump’s actions leading up to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, which have been disputed by other witnesses. A source familiar with the situation confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the DOJ is investigating Hutchinson, but did not specify whether subpoenas have been issued.

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division presented evidence to a federal grand jury earlier this week concerning charges of lying to Congress and plans to present additional evidence and witnesses later this month, according to a report from Punchbowl News. The timeline for a decision on a potential indictment of Hutchinson by the grand jury remains unclear.

Earlier this year, the Justice Department began its inquiry into Hutchinson.

Hutchinson played a significant role in the House Jan. 6 Committee’s investigation into Trump’s actions during and leading up to the 2021 Capitol riot, providing accounts of the president’s conduct on that day that have been both vivid and disputed.

One notable claim from Hutchinson, who served as an aide to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on Jan. 6, 2021, was that Trump lunged at the steering wheel of a presidential vehicle and attempted to take control after being told he could not join a crowd of his supporters marching to the Capitol. This account has been disputed by several witnesses and a House GOP report released in 2024.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump for his alleged incitement of the riot in January 2021, but he was acquitted by the Senate. Trump has denied any wrongdoing related to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, and has rejected claims of inciting a riot at the Capitol.

After returning to office in January 2025, Trump pardoned or commuted the sentences of individuals charged and convicted for their involvement in the Jan. 6 riot under the Biden administration.
