A focus group discussion in Michigan revealed notable support for Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed among voters who previously supported President Donald Trump, while Trump-backed candidate Mike Rogers received little support. Elise Jordan, a contributor for MS NOW, shared insights from the focus group on the show State of Play. Recent polling indicates El-Sayed has a narrow lead over Rogers. In the focus group, many Trump voters expressed feelings of 'buyer’s remorse' regarding their past votes for Trump. One participant noted, 'I think a lot of people looked at his 2016 win and how much better the country was before Covid, and hoped that it would replicate that. And it doesn’t.' Another participant described Trump as a 'good liar' and mentioned feeling regret about her vote. Out of ten voters in the focus group, six had made a decision regarding their support in the Senate race, with five backing El-Sayed and one supporting Rogers, albeit reluctantly. Another participant indicated she was leaning towards Rogers but remained undecided. Jordan remarked on the unexpected lack of support for Rogers in the group, noting that polling suggests El-Sayed is attracting more support from Trump voters. A recent Fox News poll indicated that 8% of Trump voters support El-Sayed, while 6% of voters for former Vice President Kamala Harris support Rogers. MS NOW also conducted a separate focus group with Black voters in Michigan, who expressed more skepticism towards the candidates.
