The 2026 Devographics survey indicates significant challenges faced by software developers. Nearly half of the respondents reported experiencing job insecurity and insufficient wages, with a quarter having been laid off at some point in their careers. Additionally, nearly 10% were laid off within the last nine months, and over a quarter anticipated needing to change careers within the next five years.
This survey was the first to inquire about developers' mental health, revealing concerning trends. Approximately two-thirds of respondents reported feeling less motivated and more cynical recently. About half indicated struggles with focus, increased procrastination, feelings of being drained, and a diminished sense of accomplishment and effectiveness at work.
The survey also addressed developers' perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI), which has become prevalent in the industry. Responses were polarized, with 49% expressing positive views towards AI and 42% holding negative opinions.
The survey highlighted ongoing issues of discrimination within the industry. Female respondents reported experiencing discrimination more frequently than their male counterparts and were more likely to alter their behavior or appearance to fit workplace culture. Similarly, LGBT+ respondents and those with ADHD and autism described feeling pressured to conceal their identities at work, which increases their risk of burnout.
The survey suggests that while the development landscape is changing rapidly due to AI, other issues remain stagnant, affecting the well-being of developers. The report emphasizes the importance of ongoing conversations about the impact of AI and workplace culture to foster a more supportive environment for all developers.
