Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that 650 drones were aimed at the city overnight, stating that Russian defense forces intercepted most of the drones at a long range and shot down an additional 105 as they approached Moscow airspace. According to Russia’s TASS state news agency, this attack is one of the largest Ukrainian drone offensives in the past two years.

This attack follows a series of exchanges between Russia and Ukraine in recent weeks, raising concerns about the targeting of energy infrastructure by both sides.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry indicated in a statement that the airstrikes from Monday into Tuesday also targeted “a series of Russian military objectives in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.” The ministry highlighted strikes on a Russian “telecommunications hub” near Donetsk, Russian personnel in several eastern Ukraine cities, a Russian army command post, and Russian drone and ammunition depots.

On Sunday, Russia deployed 135 attack drones to Ukraine, bringing the total number of attack drones sent in the past week to over 1,900, according to Kyiv.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his administration is “preparing countermeasures” based on intelligence suggesting that Russia is planning a “massive strike” on Ukraine. Zelensky noted that recent Russian attacks on Ukraine included strikes on several hospitals.

Zelensky also mentioned on Monday that he anticipates a U.S.-organized meeting involving Ukraine, Russia, and officials from the Trump administration to be announced in October, emphasizing the need for Ukrainian allies to “push Russia toward diplomacy and real steps instead of killing.”

“We expect that the U.S. side will succeed in arranging a trilateral meeting in October. For now, the Russians are focused solely on strikes against Ukraine and destabilizing activities in Europe,” Zelensky said.
