Jacob D. Miller, a 44-year-old man from South Hadley, Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty to illegally importing radioactive materials from Russia and selling them in the United States, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. Miller, who was previously convicted in February 2004 for possessing child pornography and an explosive device, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and 10 years of probation. After his release, he established a business named 'Collect The Periodic Table,' where he sold samples of elements, including radioactive plutonium and the toxic element thallium.
Miller sold plutonium to approximately 67 customers between December 30, 2020, and March 31, 2025, and shipped it via US mail. He also sold thallium to 71 customers across the country. Plutonium is a radioactive metal that can be used in nuclear weapons and is highly toxic if ingested or inhaled. Thallium is an odorless and tasteless heavy metal that is also extremely toxic.
During a search of Miller’s residence in April 2025, authorities found explosive powder, numerous rounds of ammunition, and six firearms that he possessed illegally. Investigators also discovered additional child sex abuse material on his laptop and cell phone. Miller was indicted by a grand jury on April 17, 2025, and has been in custody since his arrest. He has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including being a felon in possession of ammunition and explosive materials, importing nuclear material without lawful authority, mailing hazardous materials, and possession of child pornography. Miller is scheduled for sentencing by US District Court Judge Mark Mastroianni on January 21, 2027.
