The Manchester Central Mosque held a funeral for Munir Farooqi, a convicted terrorist who was sentenced to four life sentences in 2011 for preparing terrorist acts, soliciting murder, and disseminating terror literature. Farooqi, who fought for the Taliban, died in prison at the age of 69 at the end of September. The funeral took place on September 30 and was attended by more than 100 people, including family members who reportedly consider him a martyr.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited the mosque in February 2026 while serving as mayor, sharing an Iftar meal with local worshippers. Following the funeral, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated that the Prime Minister should apologize for attending a mosque that held a funeral for a convicted terrorist, emphasizing the threat of Islamist extremism.
During his February visit, Burnham praised the mosque for its community spirit and stated the importance of allowing individuals to practice their faith freely. This visit occurred shortly after a security incident at the mosque where two men were arrested for allegedly carrying weapons.
Both Downing Street and the mosque have been approached for comments regarding the funeral.
