A video circulating online shows an Arizona State University cheerleader, Eryn Bonner, being pushed to the ground by police during an incident in Tempe on July 19. Bonner, a senior and member of the ASU Stunt team, was allegedly interfering with an arrest when she approached officers and shouted, "Let him go, let him go." The Tempe Police Department reported that Bonner has been charged with two misdemeanors: disorderly conduct and hindering or interfering with police.
The video, which includes bodycam footage, depicts Bonner being restrained and appearing to be struck by an officer. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has opted not to pursue felony charges against her.
Bonner's family released a statement expressing their distress over the incident, stating, "There are no words to fully describe the heartbreak of watching our daughter being hurt by someone entrusted to protect and serve our community." They emphasized the importance of public servants meeting high standards of conduct.
Attorney Benjamin Taylor, representing the Bonner family, called for the dismissal of the officer involved, alleging excessive use of force and inappropriate conduct. He described the officer's actions as "very extreme" and unnecessary.
Josh Logan, a former police officer, commented that if Bonner did strike the officer, the use of force may be justified, but he noted concerns regarding the manner in which she was handled during the arrest.
The Tempe Police Department confirmed that an internal investigation is underway and stated that they take allegations of officer misconduct seriously. They are currently reviewing the incident and all available evidence.
