A 105-year-old World War II Army veteran, Dominick Critelli, performed the national anthem at the New York Islanders' home opener against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday. Critelli, who gained attention for his saxophone rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' during a previous game, expressed gratitude for his experiences in the U.S. military. 'What this country has done for me, no other country in the world could do — and I mean that,' he stated.
Critelli's performance was honored with a jersey featuring the number 105, presented by former Islanders player Butch Goring. Critelli, who survived the Normandy landings and played a significant role in the Battle of the Bulge, was knighted by French President Emmanuel Macron in 2024 for his contributions to the liberation of France.
After the war, Critelli continued to perform music for troops and audiences, recently playing at a physical therapy facility following a leg injury. He shared his journey from Italy to America, where he developed a passion for music at a young age. Critelli, who has performed at schools, emphasizes the importance of discussing freedom with students.
Critelli's life story has gained recognition, and he enjoys the attention from his performances at Islanders games, noting the joy it brings him. He remains committed to honoring those who served and sharing his experiences with younger generations.
