A Georgia singer, Sky Whatley, has been charged with simple battery following an incident during a performance at the Legendary Awards Show & Concert on September 6. The alleged assault, which was captured on video, involved Whatley striking a woman named Shamika Boyd, resulting in two black eyes and damage to her tooth. An arrest warrant for Whatley was issued earlier this week, but he has not yet been taken into custody, according to reports from 11Alive.
Boyd attended the event to support her daughter, who was DJing, and stated that she was struck without provocation. "When he hit me, I was devastated because I’m thinking, ‘Why did he hit me? He had no reason to hit me,'" Boyd told the outlet. She reported that the force of the strike caused significant injury, including the loss of a composite material from her tooth.
Additionally, Boyd alleged that Whatley made a crude gesture towards her and verbally assaulted her after the incident, saying, "Eff you B, this is for the real men." Boyd reported the incident to the police after the show, but action was not taken until recently. Boyd's attorney, Shannin Render, criticized law enforcement for their delayed response, stating, "They’re just not doing their job."
Boyd is considering legal action against Whatley to seek compensation for medical expenses and potential loss of income. Render emphasized the importance of accountability in such cases, stating, "It’s not appropriate for you to enter a venue for you to be assaulted and then have to carry the burden of your medical expenses, transportation fees, and the recovery process of not being able to work or things of that nature."
