A Florida woman has been indicted on 14 felony counts, including attempted murder, after allegedly firing a rifle at the home of singer Rihanna and rapper A$AP Rocky. The indictment against 36-year-old Ivanna Lisette Ortiz of Orlando was unsealed on Wednesday by a Los Angeles County judge. Ortiz appeared in court wearing yellow jail clothes and her attorney entered a not guilty plea on her behalf. The judge set her bail at $2.6 million.
The indictment follows a ruling that Ortiz is mentally competent to stand trial. The grand jury proceedings were conducted while Ortiz underwent psychiatric evaluation. The jurors returned their indictment on June 18, but it remained sealed until the judge's ruling on her competency. The case is now moving forward toward trial.
No injuries were reported from the shooting incident that occurred on March 8. Authorities allege that Ortiz drove a Tesla to the Beverly Hills-area property, pointed an AR-15 style rifle out the window, and fired at least 20 rounds toward the property and a neighboring house. Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott stated that Ortiz intended to kill Rihanna, with others present being collateral damage.
Bullets reportedly struck an Airstream trailer and the wall of a nursery where Rihanna's three children were located with their nanny. Rihanna's mother and several staff members were also present in the home. Both Rihanna and her mother testified before the grand jury, and their testimony is currently sealed but may be made public in about two weeks.
Rihanna described hearing loud sounds and seeing bullet marks in the windshield of the trailer. Ortiz's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman, did not comment outside the courtroom. Ortiz, who was previously charged with similar offenses in March, faces a potential life sentence if convicted on all counts.
The indictment includes 10 counts of assault with an assault weapon, one for each individual present at the two properties, and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. The couple's children, Rza, Riot, and Rocki, all under age 5, are named as victims. Prosecutors have not disclosed a motive for Ortiz's actions or any connection to Rihanna, although Ortiz had made threatening comments about the singer on social media prior to the incident.
