WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will host a lunch with technology leaders on Tuesday to discuss advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). The meeting comes as calls for regulation of AI grow louder among industry executives. Trump has previously dismissed warnings about the dangers of AI, labeling them as a 'hoax.' During the lunch, Trump is expected to unveil America.gov, a new website featuring an AI-powered tool designed to help Americans navigate government services.
Attendees of the lunch will include OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, and OpenAI's Greg Brockman, along with House Speaker Mike Johnson. Trump has emphasized the importance of innovation in the AI sector, arguing that the U.S. must maintain its lead over China in AI development.
Trump stated, 'Whoever wins AI ... wins. That’s the group that wins, and we’re leading now over China by a lot.' He has expressed concerns that regulation could hinder growth in the AI industry, which he believes could be more significant than the Industrial Revolution.
Johnson, a close ally of Trump, has advocated for the summit and believes that existing laws can be applied to AI companies without the need for new regulations. He stated, 'We do not need to jump in and hyperregulate this, because we’ll lose the race to China.'
While various AI-related bills have been introduced in Congress, there is currently no urgency to act on these issues, with lawmakers expected to return after the November 3 midterm elections.
Before the lunch, Trump will gather with Vice President JD Vance and other Cabinet members to unveil America.gov, which aims to streamline access to federal resources. The project was developed by the National Design Studio, led by Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia. Other expected attendees include SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp.
