New York Times executive shot in California; in-laws arrested on murder charges

A New York Times executive, Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was fatally shot in California, allegedly by his wife's elderly parents, who have been arrested on suspicion of murder. McKinsey, the newspaper's director of engineering for games player experience, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park in Dublin, located 35 miles (56 km) west of San Francisco, on Saturday afternoon, according to police. Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 years old and McKinsey's parents-in-law, are facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder. It is unclear whether the couple has legal representation, and they are scheduled to appear in court to formally face the charges on Wednesday. The New York Times confirmed McKinsey's death. His body was discovered at 15:00 (23:00 GMT) on Thursday afternoon outside the Dublin Sports Grounds. Witnesses reported hearing a series of gunshots before seeing the victim on the ground. One witness, Assad Razawi, stated, "I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody." The victim's daughter mentioned that her father saw the couple "walking together and then casually walk away from the shooting." The couple was arrested shortly after by an officer passing by the scene and remained in the area after the incident, according to a witness. McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by police. Authorities have not disclosed any motive for the shooting. The elderly couple is being held at the Santa Rita jail and also face charges of felony conspiracy, willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment.
