The latest ad, which includes a disclaimer stating it is 'Paid for by the U.S. Government,' features President Donald Trump promising to 'expel the warmongers from our government' and 'cast out the communists, Marxists, and fascists' ahead of the November midterm elections. Thune remarked, 'It’s a great message. I like the message. But it shouldn’t be paid for with taxpayer dollars.' This ad is part of a series of campaign-style videos funded by the federal government, which have drawn bipartisan scrutiny due to concerns over the misuse of taxpayer funds to promote Trump and Republican candidates as elections approach. The administration has reportedly spent over $1.5 million on three such ads, according to ad-tracking firm AdImpact. Critics and government watchdog groups have accused these ads of violating federal campaign finance laws and ethics rules. In the ad, Trump states, 'This is the final battle with you at my side. We will throw off the sick political class that hates our country. We will rout the fake news media, and we will liberate America from these villains once and for all.'
