Dave Mustaine of Megadeth Announces Retirement Due to Medical Condition

The frontman of the band Megadeth made this announcement during a book launch event for his memoir, <i>In My Darkest Hour</i>, on September 8, 2026, in New York City.</p><p>Mustaine revealed to an audience of approximately 200 attendees that he has been diagnosed with Dupuytren’s contracture, a condition that causes the fingers to curl due to tightening tissue under the skin. He explained, “I have an injury to my hand... the tendons have grown together and are pulling my finger down.”</p><p>Dupuytren’s contracture, also known as Viking’s disease, affects more men than women and currently has no permanent cure. Treatment options include physical therapy, ultrasonic or heat treatments, corticosteroid injections, needle aponeurotomy, and surgery.</p><p>While some musicians with this condition have returned to performing after surgery, Mustaine stated that he would not continue performing without the ability to play guitar. He expressed his commitment to completing the current tour and supporting the band's latest record, after which he will assess the situation: “I think about, ‘Could I carry on if I just sang?’ I wouldn’t want to do that. I would want to play guitar because that’s my love.”</p><p>Mustaine previously faced health challenges, including a throat cancer diagnosis in 2019, which led to the cancellation of many shows. He announced in August 2025 that Megadeth would retire following the release of their 17th studio album.</p><p>During the book launch, Mustaine shared that upon learning of his diagnosis, he immediately contacted his wife, Pamela Casselberry, with whom he has two children. He reflected on the importance of making the most of the time he has left, stating, “Getting up in the morning is a choice for all of us, and what we’re going to do with that day... It’s important to use those days wisely.”</p>
