<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>EDGEWOOD, Pennsylvania —</strong> The Evans family hosted an annual Halloween party in their backyard on Linden Avenue. Neighbor Jeannine Fisher recalled to WPXI, the local NBC affiliate, that the gatherings attracted many people and children. She also remembered meeting Idris Evans for the first time when he assisted her in carrying groceries to her home.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The neighborhood is characterized by a sense of community where residents typically do not worry about security, even with windows open on warm nights.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just after midnight on Thursday, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/edgewood-2-people-stabbed-allegheny-county/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">police reported</a> that an intruder entered through a window.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Evans, 46, and his wife, Gina, awoke in their third-floor bedroom to find a man in his underwear attacking them with a kitchen knife. Gina Evans later informed police, <a href="https://www.pennlive.com/crime/2026/09/suspect-in-upmc-physicians-fatal-stabbing-was-free-on-no-cash-bond.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">according to the criminal complaint</a>, that the assailant appeared “psychotic” and spoke about God. She yelled for their two sons, aged 8 and 12, to flee to a neighbor’s house, which they did. Gina then ran to another neighbor’s house after sustaining serious injuries.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Idris Evans later died in the hospital. He was a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, co-medical director of its <a href="https://triblive.com/local/calm-among-the-chaos-colleagues-fondly-recall-slain-upmc-doctor-idris-evans/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">pediatric transport team</a>, and an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Police located the suspect hiding in a neighbor's overgrown garden, bleeding from cuts on his hands.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The suspect, identified as Elijah Hemingway, 32, from Pittsburgh’s <a href="https://triblive.com/local/suspect-in-upmc-doctors-stabbing-death-has-criminal-mental-health-history-in-florida/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hazelwood</a> neighborhood, faces charges of criminal homicide, attempted homicide, burglary, and aggravated assault. He is presumed innocent.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further investigation revealed troubling details about Hemingway's background. He had been arrested in Allegheny County in July on a felony burglary charge and <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/elijah-hemingway-pittsburgh-doctor-stabbing-home-invasion/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">released</a> without bail. He had spent most of 2025 in a Florida jail and a court-ordered mental health commitment after allegedly assaulting a girlfriend and resisting arrest. Additionally, on the day before the Evans family was attacked, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/elijah-hemingway-charged-in-wilkinsburg-sexual-assault-case/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">county police</a> charged him with raping a woman in Wilkinsburg, a borough adjacent to Pittsburgh.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fisher expressed the sentiment shared by many in the community: “It feels like it could have been any of us.”</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Details surrounding Hemingway's prior arrests and legal history have raised questions about the decisions made regarding his release. In February, police reported a woman on the <a href="https://www.pennlive.com/crime/2026/09/suspect-in-upmc-physicians-fatal-stabbing-was-free-on-no-cash-bond.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">North Side of Pittsburgh</a> discovered her home had been burglarized. Surveillance footage captured her former partner, who was not allowed inside, stealing items from her home.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hemingway was arrested on July 9, and a day later, Senior District Judge Anthony Ceoffe <a href="https://triblive.com/local/suspect-in-upmc-doctors-stabbing-death-has-criminal-mental-health-history-in-florida/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">released him</a> on a nonmonetary bond.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <em>Pittsburgh Tribune-Review</em> reported that such bonds are not uncommon for similar charges. Pittsburgh attorney Phil DiLucente noted that Pennsylvania’s online court system indicated Hemingway had no significant prior criminal history, only minor offenses.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, records show that Hemingway had pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct multiple times, with domestic partners listed as victims. The <em>Pittsburgh Tribune-Review</em> identified 16 prior charges against him. A background check by the Volusia County, Florida, sheriff’s office revealed multiple arrests for assault and aggravated assault that did not result in prosecution.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. stated that his office was not present during the arraignment, which is typically attended only if requested by police or concerned citizens. He indicated that had they known about Hemingway's history, they might have appealed the judge's decision.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">District Court Administrator Joseph J. Asturi explained that judges at arraignments receive various documents, including criminal histories. However, it remains unclear whether Hemingway's Florida history was included in those documents.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Allegheny County’s chief public defender, Andy Howard, argued against the notion that simply holding more individuals in jail is the solution. He noted that under Pennsylvania law, bail can only be denied for severe offenses or when no conditions can ensure public safety.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hemingway's issues in Florida began in March 2025, where he faced domestic violence allegations. Following multiple incidents, he was deemed incompetent to stand trial and was held for treatment. He was later released after being found competent.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The circumstances surrounding his release have led to discussions about the effectiveness of the county's bail reform policies, which aim to reduce jail populations. Critics argue that the system may prioritize reducing incarceration rates over public safety.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hemingway was arraigned on the Wilkinsburg rape charges and <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/news/elijah-hemingway-charged-in-wilkinsburg-sexual-assault-case/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">denied bail</a>. A preliminary hearing for the Pittsburgh burglary charge is scheduled for Thursday, and the Wilkinsburg hearing is set for October 9. A candlelight vigil for Evans is planned for Sunday at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.</p>
