DETROIT — The New York Jets lost running back Breece Hall in the fourth quarter due to a thigh injury sustained while attempting a run from the Detroit 4-yard line, resulting in no gain. Hall concluded the game with 32 yards on 13 carries, marking his second consecutive game with limited performance after rushing for over 100 yards in the season opener.
“It sucks, but it’s part of the game,” Hall stated after the game. “I felt something when I was running, and then got tackled and planted it and felt something. So, we’ll see.”
Additionally, the Jets lost left guard Dylan Parham to a left knee injury in the third quarter, which appears to be the more serious injury sustained during the game.
The Jets offense faced challenges against the Lions due to a compromised receiving corps. Starter Adonai Mitchell was inactive due to a finger injury sustained in practice on Thursday. Mitchell, who has been targeted a team-high 15 times with nine receptions for 123 yards, practiced on Friday with a heavy wrap on his right hand, with his index and middle fingers appearing to be in a splint. Head coach Aaron Glenn did not disclose the specifics of the injury but mentioned, “I don’t think it’s broke.”
The Jets were already missing several wide receivers on injured reserve, including rookie Omar Cooper Jr., Tim Patrick, and Arian Smith. This left the team to rely on starter Garrett Wilson and several role players, including Isaiah Williams, undrafted free agent rookie Malik McClain, Sterling Shepard, and Jamaal Pritchett, both of whom were signed off the practice squad. Shepard recorded one catch for 3 yards and also caught a crucial two-point conversion pass that tied the game at 24-24.
Tight end Mason Taylor was also absent from the game due to a thumb injury. On a positive note, rookie cornerback D’Angelo Ponds and edge rusher Joseph Ossai, who missed the first two games, made their debuts with the team. Ponds played sparingly on defense and had a couple of snaps on special teams.
Tight end Jelani Woods made a catch for 20 yards in the second quarter, marking his first offensive touch of the season. The game featured touchdowns from tight ends Kenyon Sadiq and Jeremy Ruckert, marking the first instance since 2019 where the Jets had multiple tight ends catch a touchdown pass in a single game.
The Jets defense extended their streak of games without an interception to 20, covering 632 pass attempts by opposing quarterbacks. Inactive players for the Jets, aside from Mitchell and Taylor, included running back Kene Nwangwu, cornerback Nahshon Wright, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, linebacker Kiko Mauigoa, and kicker Blake Grupe.
