Coast Guard Airlifts Sailor from Santa Rosa Island After Sailboat Grounds

A sailor was airlifted to safety by the Coast Guard after a sailboat ran aground on Santa Rosa Island, located off the Southern California coast, on Thursday, September 24. The Coast Guard received a report at approximately 12:20 p.m. that a 25-foot sailboat had become stranded. Santa Rosa Island is part of Channel Islands National Park and is California’s second largest island, according to the National Park Service. Emergency crews responded by helicopter and airlifted the sailor to Camarillo Airport, where they were evaluated by the Ventura County Fire Department. Photos released by the Coast Guard depicted the stranded sailboat along the island’s shoreline, with rescue crews in the vicinity. The Coast Guard confirmed that the sailboat was subsequently removed by a local towing company and transported to Ventura Harbor.
