Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, is scheduled to have a private dinner with President Trump at the White House on Sunday night. This meeting follows Amodei's earlier remarks advocating for a slowdown in the development of artificial intelligence technology, which Trump has dismissed.
The dinner is part of the Trump administration's increasing engagement with A.I. and technology executives amid concerns regarding the risks associated with artificial intelligence. Earlier this week, Trump hosted other A.I. executives during a state dinner for President Xi Jinping of China and is set to hold a summit on Tuesday to discuss A.I. and introduce a new government website aimed at helping Americans access federal information.
Amodei co-founded Anthropic, known for its Claude chatbot, and has been vocal about the safety risks of A.I., calling for global cooperation on regulatory frameworks. Trump has previously rejected such concerns, stating, "The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel.’ And we will continue to do so!"
While Trump has labeled serious threats from A.I. as a “hoax,” there are members within his administration advocating for a more cautious approach. The upcoming dinner may indicate a willingness to consider these warnings.
The White House and Anthropic did not provide comments on the dinner. Earlier reports indicated tensions between the Trump administration and Anthropic, particularly regarding a $200 million contract with the Pentagon, which led to the company being designated a “supply chain risk to national security.” A recent federal appeals court ruling upheld the administration's decision to bar Anthropic from government work due to national security concerns, leaving the company in a challenging position that Amodei may address during the dinner.
